Academy of Chess and Checkers is a band, originally from Los Angeles, now based in Chicago.
The band is said to draw inspiration from the likes of Neil Young, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, Wilco, Wes Anderson, and Stanley Kubrick (whose film The Killing played a formative roll in the Academy's evolution). Although when asked about these claims, they refused to comment.
In attempting to describe the Academy, people have said things like "Johnny Cash mixed with Pink Floyd", or "Beck doing Tom Waits songs", but the one we like best is "Tom Petty remixed by David Lynch".
All compositions are written by Academy of Chess and Checkers except for: "Boats Were Not Made to Stay in the Harbor" by Academy of Chess and Checkers/Dave Bauer and "Girl From the North Country" by Bob Dylan. Ok, now that we've told you all about us, why not make us your friend over at MySpace? Or perhaps, you'd like to give us your email address (top right), so we can keep in touch.
